NORKLIMA: CLEOPATRA II got funded!

This NORKLIMA-project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council 2012-2015, is a following up project of the Norwegian IPY-project CLEOPATRA. It is led by the University Centre in Svalbard, UNIS (project leader J.E. Søreide) in close cooperation with the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) and the Alfred Wegner Institute for Polar- and Marine Research (AWI). This project will be an integrated part of the ARCTOS network (http://www.arctosresearch.net/), a leading network for Arctic marine ecosystem research.

New master of Science: Allison M. Bailey

15 December 2010, Allison M. Bailey, successfully defended her master thesis: Lipids and diapause in Calanus spp. in a high-Arctic fjord: state-dependent strategies? Tracking lipids through the polar night Allison joined the "Year-round study 2008-2009" in Billefjorden collecting zooplankton samples monthly from July 2008 to September 2009, investigating the population and lipid dynamics of Calanus spp., and their seasonal vertical migration patterns.

CLEOPATRA in Oslo

During the IPY science conference in Oslo last week, many of the CLEOPATRA involved researchers found their way to Norway's capital and presented the most recent results from our project. Janne Søreide was interviewed by Sue Nelson from BBC.

On the way to a circumpolar synthesis of marine research at lower trophic levels

A team of CLEOPATRA researchers from NP and UNIS travelled last week to Rimouski, Canada to meet their colleagues from the CFL-project (Circumpolar Flaw Lead Study), one of the largest ongoing IPY-projects.

Field work in Svalbard has started

Two weeks ago a small team of three went to Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard to carry out experiments about the effect of light and UV radiation on algal food quality. About 10 days later, a group of 6 went to Rijpfjorden on Nordaustlandet to continue our sampling activities there, and to pick up alive copepods that will be used in experiments in Longyearbyen in May/June.
